Was quoted a ridiculous price by the council so got in touch with these guys and they have been spot on. A fair price and I'm chuffed with the work they've done. Would definitely use them again for any future work

Thank you to all involved. The company very efficiently took care of all the permit and approval paperwork with the local authority. They then expertly removed the old Kerbs and paving, fitted new dropped Kerbs and perfectly re-laid the paving – sloping to align with the new Kerbs. Everything left clean and tidy. They know their business and we thoroughly recommend their services.

A kerb drop is a legal requirement if you wish to drive across the pavement onto your property.

Any entry onto a public highway from a residential or commercial driveway area must have a vehicle crossover.

Kerb dropping allows vehicles to cross the pavement from the road to a driveway and it is a legal requirement if you intend to drive across the pavement onto your property.

Installing a vehicle access crossover can make a huge improvement to easy access your property along with helping to make sure people do not park across your driveway.

The law regarding the access states: If you plan to drive a vehicle over the footway in to your driveway off a highway, then you will need to make these changes to your access.

If you do not, you must not drive over the footway. If you do so, you are breaking the law and enforcement action might be taken to prevent such practice.

The pavement may require to be strengthened in front of the building, and sometimes, it may be essential for lampposts, manhole covers and various other street furniture to be moved.

Kerb drops, also known as vehicle access crossovers, are an adaptation to the footpath. It involves lowering the kerb and laying new foundations to the paving to make it possible for a car to be driven onto the front area of a property.

The work includes lowering the kerbstones and bolstering the pavement to create a ramp, and must only be performed by an authorised provider with Street Works Accreditation, and who have the required Public Liability insurance to fulfill the local authorities requirements.

Vehicle access cross overs consist normally of 3 or 4 dropped kerbs with a tapered or transition kerb on either side. The standard maximum total width at road level for a VAC is 3.6 metres (i.e. normally 4 kerbs).

We have several years experience in putting in drop kerbs and making an application for the relevant planning permission. We can work in partnership with your local county council  whilst complying with all essential regulations.

Morton Kerb Dropping Contractors

The huge growth in demand for off-street parking has seen a growing number of people drop kerbs to create car standing at the front of their homes.

Study by home insurer Direct Line shows that off-street parking is seen by estate agents as a beneficial feature which adds market value to a residential or commercial property. This, combined with escalating parking restrictions in lots of residential locations, has brought about planning applications  increase massively over recent years.

However while putting in car standing space to the front of your home can add market value to your property, there are many things to consider, not least environmental consequences, and flooding is a major issue.

When you switch out a front garden with hard standing, rainwater can no longer soak into the ground. As more and more households take this action, the cumulative effect severely increases the threat of flooding, so it’s important to incorporate drainage in your plans.

Planning permission is usually required if you wish to drop the kerb outside your building to enable a car to cross the pavement. This is because the pavement may need to be strengthened to take the weight of vehicles and prevent them from damaging the surface or any water pipes or cables underneath. It is in addition to ensure the new access will not be a safety risk to other highway users.

You can learn if you need planning permission by contacting your local council (you can find the relevant council at the government website). How much it costs to apply will depend on your location.

If permission is approved, you then you need to find a local contractor to do the work for you.

It’s definitely not a DIY job as the council will have criteria that service providers must meet. Some will only allow you to use their endorsed contractors, while others allow you to use your own, so long as they are accredited to the requirements of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991, and carry public liability insurance. For this case, there may be an added fee for highway assessments by the council.

However first it’s worth establishing if consent is likely to be granted. Below is a checklist of points to consider. If any among these criteria is not met, planning permission is likely to be declined:

  • Your front garden needs to be big enough for you to park your vehicle entirely on your property.
  • The kerb needs to be at minimum 4.8 m from the front of your house; or 6m if the parking area is in front of a door or garage.
  • The parking area should be at least 2.4 m wide.
  • The proposed access to your property should be more than 10m away from a road junction; 15m away from busy junctions or on major roads.
  • It has to be at least 1.5 m away from street lights and various other street furniture.
  • It must meet visibility guidelines; this depends upon the type of road.
  • Suitable drainage needs to be provided to remove the excess surface water.
The removal of tree roots should be avoided.
  • The incline from your property to the road must not be too steep.
  • Finally, you as the home owner must agree to the kerb being dropped; for example, a renter can not apply on their landlord’s behalf.

Q and A’s

Prices will vary depending upon your location, pavement width, number of kerbs to drop, and whether you want to extend an old dropped kerb. While some councils and contractors offer extended dropped kerbs for free, others charge as much as £1800. The entire job takes about 1 to 2 hours.

Highways Act 1980 Section 184 states that it is an offense to drive a vehicle on a footway or verge if there isn’t a proper vehicle crossing. They allow for the vehicle to cross the public pedestrian footway.

For an average driveway, you will probably want to lower five kerb sections. Assuming that your road and footpath are owned by the Council, you will need to apply for permission from them. The Council may refuse to grant permission as either a roads authority or a planning authority, or both.

Dropped kerbs are the areas where vehicles cross the road to reach the property’s front. A driveway often has a dropped curb.

A vehicle parked partially or fully across a dropped curb is considered obstruction. The police or the local council can enforce this violation. Even though it sounds absurd, you may be issued a PCN to park on top of your own dropped curb.

Parking on a drop kerb is considered a parking violation and can result in a Penalty Notice. You can be fined for parking on a dropped kerb if you don’t have permission.

A spot for a vehicle will bring additional value to your property. The amount you pay will depend on whereabouts. Keep in mind, however, that dropping a kerb on your property outside will require you to submit an application.

There must be at least 10 metres between the entrance to a junction or sharp corner and the location of the proposed vehicular access. The pavement or road must not be overhang by any vehicle that is parked within your property.

To allow a car on the pavement to cross it, you will need permission. This is because pavement may need to have additional strength to handle the vehicle’s weight, as well as protect any pipes or cables underneath.

Dropped kerbs are required for vehicles that will be driven over the footway to your driveway from a highway. You cannot drive on the footway if you don’t have a dropped curb. Doing so is a violation of the law, and enforcement actions could be taken against you.
